Rukeri Batwa Community in addition to other areas surrounding Mount Muhabura and Mugahinga Gorilla National Park were on 24th of January 2022 hit by heavy floods and mudslides which originated from Mount Muhabura. The cause of these floods is not yet known as there is no scientific research that has been conducted ever since this sinister event happened. People who were around this place when these floods occurred linked the events to volcanic action because they said the water was very hot and sticky. The smell from these flowing waters was not so common, something that keeps worrying citizens living near this mountain.
It should be noted that these areas have always received heavy rains than what had rained on the eve of 24/01/2022.
These heavy floods killed 9 people and a big number of those who died were children and Rukeri Batwa Community Lost 2 children Mfite Rafiki and Mukamusoni who was a niece to Rafiki.
Houses were destroyed and as a result Rukeri Batwa Community hangs in balance as the flood split the community land into two and the biggest occupied area has been left vacant to save lives. The Chief Administrative Officer Guided that no house should be constructed in the water way and 12 houses need to be shifted.
As a mitigation measure, we plan to plant many trees around this batwa settlement so that in case the event happens again in future, the trees can curb the speed of running water.
